Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which to Use?
ยท 3 min read
Every QR code is either static or dynamic, and the choice affects what you can do after you print. Here is the practical difference.
The short version
A static code stores your information inside the pattern. A dynamic code stores a short link that redirects to your information. That one design difference explains everything below.
Side by side
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Edit after printing | No | Yes, for 7 days after you create it |
| Scan tracking | No | Yes |
| Cost | Free | Paid plan |
| Works if the provider disappears | Yes | No |
| Complexity of the pattern | Grows with the data | Always a short link, so simpler |
When static is the right choice
Use a static code when the information will never change and you do not need numbers. Good examples are Wi-Fi details, a contact card, a plain text note, an email address, a phone number, and a permanent link to something you control.
Static codes are also the safest for things that must outlive any vendor, such as a plaque or monument. Nobody has to keep paying for them.
When dynamic is the right choice
Use a dynamic code when you want to:
- Fix or update a link after printing, for example a campaign page that moves. On QRzify you can do this for 7 days after you create the code.
- Measure scans by day, city and device.
- Send traffic into Google Analytics with UTM tags.
- Reuse the same printed material for a different offer next season.
- Manage many codes across campaigns.
A simple rule
If you would be upset by a typo in the link after the print run, or you will be asked "how many people scanned it", use dynamic. Otherwise use static.
Cleaner patterns, easier scanning
Because a dynamic code only holds a short link, its pattern has fewer dots and scans faster at small sizes. That helps on packaging and business cards, where space is tight.
Pick a provider you can trust
Dynamic codes depend on the provider's domain for as long as the code is in use. Before you print, check what happens if you stop paying and whether you can pay month to month. With QRzify, a lapsed payment gives you a grace period and then pauses the code instead of breaking it, and static codes are always free.
