Free vs Paid Dynamic QR Codes in India
· 3 min read
If you search for a "free dynamic QR code generator", you will find a lot of tools that start free and end up charging. The reason is simple once you know how the two kinds of QR code work.
Static codes: free and permanent
A static QR code has your link written directly into the pattern. When someone scans it, their phone reads the link and opens it. Nothing passes through a server, so the code costs nothing to run and works for as long as your link does. That is why genuinely free static codes can exist.
The catch is that a static code cannot be edited and cannot be tracked. If your landing page moves, the printed code is stuck pointing at the old address.
Dynamic codes: a server is involved
A dynamic code stores a short link on the generator's own domain instead. When someone scans it, the request goes to that server first, which records the scan and then forwards the person to your real destination. That small hop is what lets you change the destination and count scans. Here, the destination can be changed for 7 days after you create the code.
It also means somebody has to keep that server and domain running for as long as your code is in the wild. That has a real cost, which is why "free forever" dynamic codes are rare and often come with strict limits.
What to watch for with free trials
Before you print anything, check these things:
- What happens when the trial ends. Some tools stop redirecting dynamic codes after a short trial, which breaks anything you already printed.
- Scan limits. A free plan may cap how many scans a code can receive each month.
- Commitment length. Some tools only sell three, six or twelve month plans, so you pay upfront for a tool you are still testing.
- Where the short link lives. Your printed code depends on that domain for as long as it exists. A tool that disappears takes your codes with it.
How to choose
Use a static code when the link will never change and you do not need numbers: a Wi-Fi code, a contact card, a one-off poster. Use a dynamic code when you will print in volume, run campaigns, want to see scans by city and device, or might need to fix a link in the first week after printing.
How QRzify approaches it
QRzify gives you unlimited static codes for free. Dynamic codes are paid by the month with no lock-in, priced in rupees, from ₹29 a month for a single code. If a payment ever fails, you get a grace period and warnings, and then the code pauses with a friendly page instead of breaking. We never delete a code, and one payment brings it back.
Whichever tool you pick, ask the same question before you print: what happens to this code if I stop paying? The answer tells you how much to trust it.
